Asia follows Wall Street tumble
Asian stocks tumbled sharply in Thursday trading after Wall Street finished at its lowest point since Spring 2003. Tokyo's Nikkei index fell 5.7 percent and Seoul's KOSPI index dropped 5.5 percent, while Australia's All Ordinaries index slipped 3.7 percent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 5.5 percent.

UK, France push for more U.N. troops in Congo
Britain and France are calling for an additional 3,000 United Nations troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the U.N. already has its biggest peacekeeping mission, a senior British diplomat said Wednesday.

India claims pirate ship sunk off Africa
The Indian warship Tabar has exchanged fire with a pirate "mother vessel" off the Horn of Africa, an official said Wednesday. Indian naval spokesman Nirad Sinha said: "Given the condition we left it in, it would have sunk by now."
